How Do I Get Started in Cybersecurity?

How do I get started in cybersecurity?

If you’re starting from ground zero, we recommend starting with the “Careers in Cybersecurity'' and “Entry-Level Cybersecurity Training” courses. From there, we recommend completing the “IT and Cybersecurity Foundations” career path.

These titles will give you an introduction into different cybersecurity roles and careers, and give you a baseline understanding of terms, concepts, and skills.  From there, you can dive into more specialized topics like:

- Offensive Security (Penetration Testing, Red Team)

- Defensive Security (SOC Analyst, Incident Handler, Blue Team)

- Security Engineering (Network Engineer/Architect, System Administrator)

- Leadership and Management

What certification is right for me?

What certification should I get if I want to:

  • Beginner Certifications: Security+, Network+, A+
  • Penetration Testing (Red Team): Pentest+, OSCP, CEH
  • Security Operations Center Analyst (SOC/Blue Team): CySA+, SC-200
  • Network Engineer/Architect: Network+, CCNA
  • System Administrator: A+, Linux+, SC-300, MS-900
  • Cloud: CCSP, Azure certs, AWS certs
  • Risk Analyst/Management: CRISC, CISM, CISSP, COBIT, HCISSP

What Career Path is right for me?

That depends.  What are you interested in doing?  If you’re unfamiliar with cybersecurity careers, we highly recommend the “Careers in Cybersecurity” course.  In that course, you’ll hear from professionals in various roles, and will also be able to complete practical labs relevant to those roles too.  Completing the course should give you the insight you need to begin on a career path.
